Seasonal Cooking for the rest of the world

Cumquat Kumquat Marmarlade

It is Autumn here. Increasingly we are revelling in the delightful light and cooler weather of Autumn. Leaves on the ground. Colour in the trees. Warm days and cold nights. Reluctantly I am reading soup recipes and thinking about creamy baked vegetable dishes …..

But many of my readers are moving into Spring. My daughter in London tells me that the weather has not yet fully understood the season change, but even she is talking quinoa salads with avocado and spring onion.

So today we revisit the dishes that I have emerged from this kitchen in a time that was Spring here. I hope it gives you inspiration for your playtime in the kitchen over the next week.

Cooking in April – Northern Hemisphere Style

  • Broad and Butter Bean Mash - a wonderful pate of young broadbeans and butter beans. The post describes how to peel and cook broadbeans.
  • Cool as a Cucumber – Cucumber Curry – Who would have thought that you can cook cucumber?
  • Divine Cumquat Marmalade - exactly as the name says, a divine marmarlade with vanilla bean. This is my most frequently googled recipe and in my top dozen recipes since my blog began.
  • Go Spanish – Tomato Paella – cook a paella that has intense flavour and is so easy that it cooks itself
  • Play Nice with Rice – Cooking Rice – Cooking rice is no simple thing! Read how to get good results.
  • Plump Ruby Bites - Oven Dried Tomatoes – A year round favourite, as long as I can get tomatoes, I keep roasting them.
  • Rolls Rice - Rice Rolls - Have you ever encountered these Chinese and Vietnamese wonderful rice rolls? Worth a visit to your local Asian market.
  • Squared Tofu - I wonder whether you have been introduced to tofu puffs before? They make a quick and handy snack.
  • Taking Stock - Making Great Vege Stocks. Think differently about the stock that you use.

Broad Bean Pate Play nice with Rice Go Spanish Cumquat Marmalade A Tomato Feast Tofu Squares Soup Veges Rolls Rice Cucumber Curry Beetroot Salad Tomato Bruschetta. Just right for Autumn (and Spring) Simple Spaghetti

There you have it, a round-up of dishes worth cooking in April in Spring.

Enjoy!

  1. bee says:

it’s spring here, and it snowed this afternoon. :(

Oh, no, bee, you must be hangin’ out for some sun.

When I was in France for 3 months in winter, after a while I dreamed each night of Australian sunshine. :-)

  2. Cynthia says:

Well as you know, it’s summer here all year round but I must say that the evenings are cool and refreshing.

Hi Cynthia, you are sooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lucky! I am a hot weather girl (even tho Autumn here is delicious).

  3. Arundathi says:

Its definitely summer here. Temperatures are 95 deg F! The cucumbers sounds great!

Oh how wonderful for you. The rains will come soon, right? The cucumbers will be ideal in the heat.

  4. Meg Wolff says:

Oh yes, finally spring!! I’ll be watching the squash soon disappear and looking forward to farmers’ markets in a few months! Interesting post, thanks!

I am sure it will arrive some day soon ……

  5. Oh, some wonderful ideas, I’ll definitely go Spanish soon, as soon as the “weather start understanding the change of seasons!(loved that expression!) And those Ruby bites are a must…I miss those HOT southern hemisphere climates!

Ah, but you have a specialness about the cold nights of winter that we don’t have here. The way the lights glisten in the dark. Soft falls of snow. The coming in from the cold into nice warm rooms and the shedding of coats and boots. The warm kisses on the cheek with cold cold lips. Frosty fingers warmed by the stove. Ah hhh…..

But I wouldn’t change our summers. So, YES go Spanish, the tomato risotto is fab, as are the oven baked tomatoes. Enjoy! And dream of “stinking hot” weather.

Welcome! I hope you are enjoying what you see here. Thank you so much for your comment and your thoughts.
